Disciplined Agile Business Agility: One Size Does Not Fit All

How can your organization become truly agile? To do so requires an agile mindset, a flexible learning organization, and a flexible process that is easily tailored to meet your evolving situation. There is much advice about how to gain an agile mindset and how to grow a learning organization, but with the exception of the Disciplined Agile (DA) framework very little process advice is available that isn’t prescriptive or overly simplified. To complicate matters, if your organization is to be truly agile then your Information Technology (IT) must be fully agile beyond just software development. Houston, we have a problem.

The DA framework started out as Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD). In 2014 it evolved to address the full range of IT concerns and now it is evolving again to address enterprise agility. The DA framework is based on empiricism, capturing pragmatic strategies from actual practice, from purposeful experiments, and from proven methodologies. Because every organization faces a unique situation these strategies are presented in a context-sensitive manner that is easily tailored, and then easily evolved, to meet your changing needs. Organizations are complex adaptive systems where teams must collaborate with, and learn from one another, to fulfill the goals of the overall organization. To do so requires flexible team structures and team processes, and the DA framework describes exactly that.

In this presentation, Scott Ambler, co-creator of the Disciplined Agile (DA) framework, will briefly walk us through the history and philosophies of the DA framework. More importantly, he will describe strategies at the enterprise level currently being applied in organizations around the world, strategies that are in “beta” for the enterprise agility evolution of the DA framework.

About the Conference

The first conference for authentic stories and great storytellers on business agility; anything from agile outside IT, organisational design and product innovation to next-gen leadership.

Business Agility 2017 is an intense 2-day conference focusing on agile outside IT, including its applications in organisational design, product innovation, and next-gen leadership. We are bringing together some of the greatest speakers and practitioners of business agility to share their experiences and the benefits their organisations have gained from exploring new and agile practices. We will host insightful and authentic talks and workshops in one of the premier hotels in New York City. This is the first time anyone has run a conference of this kind and the demand is clear. Our goals are to:

  • Bring the local and international business agility community together in a friendly, educational and fun environment
  • Increase the density of connections among the community, and
  • Exchange and explore ideas between professionals.

We're trying something different with the conference. The conference will be highly interactive - a combination of keynotes and facilitated learning "deep dives". There will be 350 people seated together in one room (in groups of 10) for two days. Each day will be split into 4 topics (e.g. organisation design, leadership & empowerment, innovation & market disruption, governance & strategy, customer & citizen focus and leading the transformation). Each topic will have three, 20 minute, "art of the possible", case studies followed by 40 minutes of facilitated hands-on engagement. We've designed the conference so participants spend 50% of their time networking and learning from each other through these hands-on, "deep dive" sessions.

Why Business Agility

Traditional models of management and corporate governance are failing to keep up with the needs of the modern economy. Change, both technological and cultural, is occurring at faster rates than ever before. In this climate, modern enterprises will live or die on their ability to adapt. As a result, companies are turning to agile for ideas to innovate, reduce the cost of business and remain relevant in a changing market.

This is where business agility comes in. Business agility embraces change; changing how you think, changing how you work and changing the way you interact. The ability to change is important whether you are a software developer or a CEO. 2 days of authentic short stories and facilitated deep dives on business agility; focusing on organizational design, market disruption and product innovation, agile outside IT and next-gen leadership.
